Graduate Student Union - Goals

Mission Statement:
The Graduate Student Union of Central Michigan University advocates for the rights of graduate students as employees by interceding at the department, college, university, and state level. The goal of the GSU will be to ensure that graduate students are secure and satisfied financially and professionally so that they can contribute the full scope of their ability to the pursuit of academic achievement.

Goals:
Each department seems to have several unique concerns. Some concerns include pay, healthcare access, affordable housing, tuition waivers, manageable course sizes, and summer funding. The current system pits department against department, and nobody wins. With a union, graduate employees get included in the financial decisions that impact their lives. With more voices, CMU can make better choices.

Many of the changes we are requesting represent only a small portion of the university's sizeable budget, and although it is hard to make changes as individuals, we are stronger as a team. Through unions, CMU faculty and staff have negotiated better pay and good benefits. Graduate employees at four other Michigan universities have done the same. It works, and it can be done. See our information page for Frequently Asked Questions and research documents supporting unionization.
